Ceylinco Healthcare Centre launches thyroid clinic

The Ceylinco Healthcare Centre has stepped into a new area of healthcare services with the launch of a 'Thyroid Clinic' in January, the month dedicated to thyroid awareness.

A comprehensive Thyroid package which includes a risk assessment, a complete physical examination, TSH test and consultation with an Endocrinologist will be offered for just Rs 2,300 at the new clinic, the Centre announced this week.

Based on the results of these tests, further tests such as Thyroxin (T4), thyroid scans, thyroid antibody tests and thyroglobulin tests will be recommended if necessary, the Centre said.

Senior Medical Officer at the Centre, Dr. Shyama Fernando said thyroid diseases can strike at any age, and women are most at risk. "Women with undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid conditions can suffer a host of resulting hormonal problems, including, early or late puberty, menstrual irregularities, low sex drive, infertility, recurrent miscarriage, difficult pregnancies, post-partum depression, breastfeeding difficulties, weight problems, Perimenopause and menopausal symptoms," she explained.

According to Dr. Fernando, the most common health issues affecting the thyroid include Hypothyroidism - where the thyroid does not produce enough, or any thyroid hormone; Hyperthyroidism - where the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone; Autoimmune Thyroid Disease; Goiter, nodules in the thyroid, Thyroiditis - viral, autoimmune, or post-pregnancy inflammation of the thyroid; and Thyroid cancer.

"Some of the key signs and symptoms of thyroid disease include low body temperature, particularly low or high pulse, unusually low or high blood pressure, an enlarged, tender, or sensitive neck or lump in the neck, a hoarse, husky, or gravelly voice, and extreme thirst or hunger," Dr. Fernando said.

Noticeable changes in weight (gain or loss) despite no change in diet and exercise, feeling warm when others are cold, or cold when others are warm, heart palpitations, constipation and or diarrhoea/loose stools, fatigued, weakness, pains, aches, and stiffness in various joints, hands, and feet are also symptoms of thyroid disease.
