Honduran putschists attack opposition editor

Honduras: Honduran de facto regime forces attacked El Libertador daily Editor Rene Novoa, when he was travelling in a taxi to this capital's central area, the mentioned newspaper reported.

Army members and police agents made Novoa and his companion, whose name was not revealed due to security reasons, get off of a car beating them in the street.

"They crushed us with no motives. When I wanted to check how my fellow traveler was, a military man beat me in the stomach and left me on the floor. I was not able to breath for a few seconds," said Novoa.

El Libertador daily condemned the brutality of the security forces, which have been suppressing people and the media opposed to the coup since it was perpetrated on June 28.

Jhonny Lagos, the newspaper's director, was threatened by dictator Roberto Micheletti, forcing him to remain clandestine, and reporter Delmer Membre¤o was kidnapped and tortured, and is currently living in exile.
