Southern Provincial Councilor Sajin de Vass Gunawardene yesterday
challenged presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka to obtain a majority of
votes from his native Ambalangoda at the Presidential election. He
alleged that Fonseka had surrounded himself with murderers from the area
and corrupt elements adding that the people of this country cannot be
fooled.
He also stated that Fonseka was promising to increase the salaries of
public servants and the wages of the working class to the level of the
public servants with the money obtained through prevention of corruption
which he says amount to Rs. 300 billion annually.
If there was such corruption Fonseka could go before court or to the
Bribery Commission.
Vass Gunawardene further said that although Fonseka was talking of
establishing democracy there were more than 100 human rights violation
applications filed against him before the Supreme Court.
Referring to the economic policy of Fonseka, Gunawardene said Fonseka
was attempting to sell public assets under the Regaining Sri Lanka
Policy as he said that he accepted the economic policy of the UNP that
would bring disaster to the country.
He questioned what would have happened to the Sri Lankan economy
during the global economic crisis if the present government led by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa continued with UNP privatization economic
policy adding that Sri Lanka would have ended up in chaos.
Referring to the election promise by Fonseka to repay the monies of
the Golden Key depositors Gunawardene questioned what measures would he
take in respect of the depositors with Danduwam Mudalali and Sakvithi
Ranasinghe.
Gunawardene said all these promises were nothing but attempts to fool
the people of this country. But the reality was that the people could
not be fooled since even the remotest areas were attuned with the
political situation of the country.
