Ajax wrack up cricket score
Dutch giants Ajax whipped amateur outfit WHC Wezep 14-1 in a
mismatched Dutch Cup round of 16 tie on Wednesday. Markoi Pantelic
started the rout for former Tottenham boss Martin Jol’s trigger-happy
team in the 18th minute and Ajax had raced to a 6-1 lead by the break.
Ajax’s seventh goal came when the second half was minutes old, with
goals 12, 13 and 14 coming in the final five minutes.
The night proved a personal triumph for Ajax’ Uruguay winger Luis
Suarez who scored no fewer than six of the Amsterdam side’s haul. WHC
Wezep, who play in the amateur C league, were unable to exploit home
advantage, their ground boasting a 500-seater covered stand.
Launched in 1930 WHC have fallen on hard times compared to their
halcyon days back in the 1960s when they were crowned second division
champions five times. THE HAGUE, AFP
Blood doping kits found at Astana
Blood doping kits were discovered in a search of medical equipment
belonging to Lance Armstrong’s former Astana team during this year’s
Tour de France.
Blood transfusion is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The find, which was first reported by French newspaper Le Monde, was
confirmed on Wednesday to AFP by a source close to a French judicial
investigation. The source stressed that the initial inquiry by a Paris
magistrates’ court was continuing and that it was premature to suggest
the equipment might constitute illegal activity. The court in Paris
opened its inquiry in July after the discovery during the Tour de France
won by Armstrong’s teammate Alberto Contador of medical equipment such
as “syringes and perfusions”. PARIS, AFP
Algerian ‘Foxes’ back in African big time
Algeria abandoned African football obscurity this year to reach the
2010 World Cup and share the FIFA Best Mover award with Brazil.
A stunning victory over West Germany highlighted two consecutive
World Cup appearances during the 1980s and the ‘Desert Foxes’ began the
following decade by hosting and winning the African Nations Cup.
But a solitary-goal success over Nigeria in Algiers proved the
high-water mark for a national team that experienced far more lows than
highs since with coaching changes failing to arrest the slide.
