UN extends presence at Golan Heights
UN: The UN Security Council approved a six-month extension to its
mission on the Golan Heights recommended by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
The Security Council urged for the immediate enforcement of R.388 of
1973 to end Israel over 35-year occupation of Syrian territory since
1967.
The decision was adopted by unanimity of the 15 member states of the
Council and had been recommended by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.
In a recent report, the head official of the UN said the situation in
the Syrian-Israeli sector is generally in calm, but tension in the
Middle East continues.
The force of the United Nations was established in 1974 to supervise
the compliance of the cease fire between Israel and Syria after the 1973
war, during which Damascus tried unsuccessfully to recover the Golan
Heights occupied by Tel Aviv in 1967.
