President Mahinda Rajapaksa after handing over his nomination for the
forthcoming Presidential election arrived in Kandy. After visiting the
Maha Nayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters, he paid homage
to the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday. Three
thousand members of the Maha Sangha chanted Pirith to invoke blessings
on President Rajapaksa at the historic Magul Maduwa in the precincts of
the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter was also among the Maha Sangha
who took part in the Pirith chanting.
The Maha Sangha said they wished the President to continue his
efforts to develop the country in the future too.
This was the first instance when such a large number of Maha Sangha
had congregated to one place to take part in religious observances. The
clergy were from the Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala
Sasanarakshaka Mandalayas. |
