Until 1967 when the Colombo University was formed, the Mathematics

Honours Classes were held from 1922. Mathematics, as an art and a
science, provides essential tools for the advancement in many areas in
the sciences, engineering, finance and economics fields.
Pure Mathematics lies at its heart and is a core subject of human
thought. It teaches logical and abstract thinking which is essential to
form a sound basis for learning.
Mathematics plays a crucial role in education at the primary and
secondary levels. At the tertiary level a basic knowledge of Mathematics
is essential for every graduate in pursuing a successful career in
today's society. In view of this, the department strives to design its
curricula and organize its services and activities to realize the full
potential of the mathematical ability of its students and staff, Dr.
Wijerathna added.
Those with a Bachelor of Science with Pure Mathematics or Applied
Mathematics as a subject or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a
recognized university or any other equivalent qualification acceptable
to the Senate of the Colombo University can apply for these two MSc.
programs.
The objective of the MSc. Programs is to enhance the quantitative
knowledge of finance of the graduates to an international level in
theory and practice.
The program is intended to train students with financial skills
required to operate in an increasingly competitive international
environment.
The program provides a thorough knowledge in the theory of
quantitative finance and practice.
It is anticipated that graduates of this degree will serve the needs
of the financial and insurance sectors. Prospective employment
opportunities are finance director, treasurer, banker, stockbroker,
financier, credit manager, financial analyst, fund manager, actuarial
analyst and in many more sectors, Coordinator of MSc in Financial
Mathematics Dr. Sanjeewa Perera said.
The lack of sufficient knowledge in Mathematics has become the major
obstacle to supply qualified professionals to the local and
international job market.
Therefore such programs will play a major role in the Mathematical
sector in the near future, Dr. Perera added. |
