Assault of student:

School teacher granted bail

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Malanee Gunaratne granted cash bail in Rs 25,000 and personal bail in Rs 1.5 million to a teacher of a school in Panadura in an assault case.

In this case, the accused. Gamini Udaya Kumara Edirisooriya, a class teacher of Panadura St. John's College was indicted by the Attorney General with assaulting Harsha Tharindu Wijegunawardena, a student of the school and damaging his eardrum on February 23, 2004 while he was studying in the classroom.

The student was admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital and treated by medical officers. On a complaint made to Panadura Police, the suspect was arrested. The Children and Women's Bureau is handling investigations.

Following the investigation report the Attorney General indicted the suspect. State Counsel Chathurangi Mahawaduge represented the Attorney General.
