Emerging countries for unity in Copenhagen
Denmark: A day after a draft declaration elaborated by Denmark
was made known a crisis arose in the Summit on Climatic Change, to
counter a joint proposal presented by Brazil, South Africa, India and
China representing emerging countries.
The text is being studied by the Group of the Seven and China, and is
expected to be adopted as a final draft declaration after some
adjustments.
According to the Indian delegation, the proposal establishes basic
differences regarding the responsibility of the developed and developing
countries to face climatic changes.
The text demands the industrialized world to go for more ambitious
goals regarding the reduction of gas emissions and at the same time to
support the emergent economies with financial resources and technology.
Financially, the people in poor and small island countries should be
prioritized and the funds should be enough to pay for the efforts of the
rest of the countries.
The proposal, known as BASIC, will be officially presented to the UN
Convention on Climatic Change once it is approved by the Group of Seven.
The text was written in response to the document elaborated by
Denmark.
The Summit will conclude on December 18 with the presence of more
than 50 Heads of State and Government. Copenhagen, Prensa Latina |
