Bar Association’s sports Gala - a tremendous success

The “Sports Gala 2009” organised by the Sports Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) was held at the St. Joseph’s College Ground recently

The Chief Guest was Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and the Guest of Honour was Solicitor General Priyasath Dep PC. The BASL organised this annual event to promote sports like cricket, foot-ball, tennis, badminton, carrom and athletics amongst lawyers, who seldom find the time to devote to sports, BASL Sports Committee Chairman Godfrey Cooray said.

Chief Justice Asoka de Silva, after distributing trophies to the winners, thanked the organisers of the BASL ‘Sports Gala 2009’ for the great effort taken to hold a colourful sports event of this magnitude despite the rain.

This was a sports gala organized to improve sport skills and leadership qualities among the legal practitioners, the Chief Justice said.

“I wish to thank the organisers for their untiring and dedicated efforts to make this annual event a success, the Chief Justice added.

Attorney General, President’s Counsel Mohan Pieris in a message to the ‘Sports Gala 2009’ stated that “I am delighted at the fact that the Bar Association finds time every year to encourage fellowship through a day dedicated to sports.This event gives us lawyers, senior and junior, an opportunity to renew our spirits, relax and refresh ourselves in an atmosphere of great friendship and promotes the much cherished principle, that what matters, is not whether you win or lose but whether you played the game.” Solicitor General Priyasath Dep PC also thanked the organisers of the “Sports Gala 2009” for their great effort in organising an event of this nature.

The BASL President W. Dayaratne thanked the Chief Guest Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and the Guest of honour Solicitor General Priyasath Dep PC for their presence at the BASL “Sports Gala 2009”.
