Infant in garbage dump

A five month old infant was found inside a garbage dump behind the Nuwara-Eliya Base hospital on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratne said following information received, police found a male infant aged between five to six months in a garbage dump behind the Nuwara-Eliya hospital at around 10.00 a.m. -RJ


Displaced can vote in Colombo

The people who were registered as voters in Jaffna electorate and are now living in Colombo and suburbs as displaced people will get an opportunity to cast their vote in the Presidential Elections in their areas of temporary residential, the Election Secretariat announced.

According to the announcement the applications are to be filled by such voters and the electoral registry of Jaffna will be displayed at Wellawatte Post Office from December 3, onwards during office hours.

The respective voters without NICs should apply for a temporary ID card before January 15, next year to get temporary ID cards free before the election day.

Meanwhile, six candidates from minor political parties have placed their deposits for the upcoming presidential election.


De Mazenod College OBU, North America Ltd - Annual Dinner Dance

The De Mazenod College Old Boy's Union, North America Ltd is comprised of Alumni of De Mazenod College, Kandana - Sri Lanka and well-wishers in the USA and Canada. The DMC OBU-North America Ltd is dedicated to developing educational, social, cultural, economical and moral advancement of De Mazenod College Community in Sri Lanka.

Mazenodians from diverse fields, living in different states rallied together in December 2008. The 2nd annual OBU reunion will be on December 5 at Hotel Ramada Inn. 999, US 01 South, North Brunswick, New Jersey, USA.

Four missing after dinner

A businessman and three others have been reported missing and the cab they travelled in was recovered by police yesterday morning in Castle Street near the railway crossing. A businessman involved in the tea trade and three of his friends from Rajagiriya had gone for dinner to a well known fast food outlet on Wednesday evening, police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunar- atna said.

SSP Karunaratna noted that initial investigations revealed that the four had dinner at the outlet between 8.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Four teams from the Borella Police and the Colombo Criminal Division are investigating. The abandoned cab bearing number 65-6262 was owned by the businessman. -RJ


Body found in culvert

An unidentified body of a man was recovered in the South Kehelella, Divulapitiya on Wednesday evening.

The body was recovered from under a culvert in the Akkrapanaha area, Divulapitiya at around 6.00pm.


Teen latest AH1N1 victim in Ratnapura

A 14-year-old schoolboy is the latest victim of AH1N1 in Ratnapura, Health Services Director Dr. Athula Dangalle said. The death toll from AH1N1 now stands at two in Ratnapura, Dr. Dangalle said.

Seven patients receiving treatment at Ratnapura hospital have been confirmed positive for AH1N1, hospital sources said.


Dhamma sermon on December 5

A Dhamma sermon and meditation course will be held at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 on December 5 from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Ven. Galagamuwe Gnanadeepa Thera will deliver the sermon and conduct the meditation course.

All are welcome, an ACBC spokesperson said.


Ridma Sankalana

The Grade 3 section of Vidura College, Colombo will present their annual concert on December 9 at the Mahanama College Auditorium from 4.30 p.m.

Somarathna Dissanayake and Renuka Balasooriya will be the Chief Guests.

A variety entertainment “Nirmani 2009 will be staged by the Primary students of Buddhist Ladies’ College, Colombo 7 on Tuesday, December 8 at 3 p.m. at the college hall.

Religious lectures

Prayers and a religious lecture will commence on Sunday, December 6 with Rathibathul Jalaliya by Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) and Y.M. Rafi. It will be conducted after Magrib prayers and continue till Isha prayers.

A religious lecture will also be conducted by Ashsheikh Dr. P.C. Pakkeer Jaufar after Isha prayers at the Nawala Jummah Mosque.

The Community Police unit of Bambalapitiya is organizing a Multi-Faith Prayer Service to invoke blessings on the country and its people on December 4, at 6.00 p.m. at Manikkam Pillar Kovil, Lawrence Road Junction, Bamabalapitya, Colombo 4.


Crackdown on errant drivers

A special traffic program has been implemented by the Veyangoda police to arrest persons driving under the influence of liquor. Several persons who were driving under the influence of liquor were taken into custody recently.


One killed in road mishap

A motorcyclist died of injuries sustained at an accident involving a private bus and a motor cycle on Wednesday near Kalwari Church along Colombo - Negombo road.

The pillion rider is receiving in-patient treatment at Colombo National Hospital. The victim is identified as a Police Constable attached to Bambalapitiya police station.

A section of the crowd is reported to have set fire to the bus and allegedly caused damage to it.


Brothels raided

Mirihana Police Frauds Bureau conducted two separate raids in Boralasgamuwa area and arrested 15 suspects from two brothel joints which were run in the guise of massage parlours. These suspects included 12 women. They were to be produced before court.


Thuggery pays price

The suspect arrested by Chilaw police for allegedly threatening Chilaw UC Chairman Hillary Fernando with a pistol was produced before Chilaw District Judge K. Sivapakyasundaram on December 2 and remanded till December 16. Chilaw police prosecuted.


Concert

The Susuran pre-school annual concert at Thekkawatta, Palatota, Kalutara will be held at the school premises on Saturday December 5. Public Trustee Deshamanya Sarath Seneviratne will be the chief guest.


Prize giving

The Kelaniya Sri Dharmaloka Madya Maha Vidyalaya Annual Prize giving will be held in the Elphinston Theatre Maradana on December 7 from 9.00 a.m.
