ESCAP road safety strategies soon

Highways and Road Development Minister T.B. Ekanayake said that the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) road safety strategies and goals will be introduced to Sri Lanka to mitigate the number of deaths and damage to property occurring due to road accidents.

He said the Government has given a policy priority for the road safety and these ESCAP proposals will reduce the severity of road accidents while improving national and regional road safety management and the enforcement.

The Minister said that the ESCAP proposals for achieving common road safety standards in countries in the Asian region will be most appropriate in Sri Lanka as the number of deaths and property damages amounting to about Rs.4.5 million incurring a loss for the national wealth annually.
