Lak Sathosa turnover tops Rs 765 m

Lak Sathosa has recorded a significant turnover of Rs 765 million in
November for the first time. This is as a result of the lower prices of
essential items stipulated by the Government to provide relief to
consumers.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, Trade, Marketing
Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula
Gunawardene said that there is big demand from consumers for essential
items sold at lower prices in Lak Sathosa outlets around the country.
"We expect around rupees one billion turnover this month through our
sales," the Minister said. Lak Sathosa which is the state arm provides
essential items at lower prices to consumers.
He said the highest number of consumers are recorded in each Sathosa
outlet in the country these days after the Government slashed prices of
essential items since November 12.
"We have planned to expand the outlets of Lak Sathosa, Sathosa and
Coop City, up to 133, 150 and 363 respectively before end of this year,"
the Minister said. He said the Government will intervene when it is
necessary to provide relief to the public.
The prices of potatoes and big onions had increased in the last few
days due to bad weather condition in Sri Lanka and also in India where
the biggest big onion harvest is reaped.
The local big onion harvest has already been reaped in Dambulla and
Matale. |
