JVP cracks

*Somawansa skips major rally

*Ex member hits out

*Grassroot cadres unhappy

Somawansa Amarasinghe

A major crisis has hit the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) following the decision of the Party’s Central Committee (CC) to endorse the candidacy of Sarath Fonseka to run for the Presidency, with serious internal splits within the JVP coming to the surface, according to party insiders.

With the grass roots membership collectively raising their voice in protest against the CC decision, JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe had skipped the party’s Hyde Park rally on November 30.

Insiders also state that the Party Leader’s sudden decision to go abroad was a calculated move to keep away as much as possible from the party’s campaign activities.

One time JVP Central Committee member Priyanka Kothalawela who quit the party is also reported to have said that several other CC members who have accepted the strong criticism levelled against certain recent decisions by the party too have decided not to participate in the election campaign.

Meanwhile, according to party insiders MPs Bimal Ratnayaka and Sunil Handunnethi are also preparing to go abroad.
