Plan to cultivate fallow lands in Matara

An accelerated plan is afoot to cultivate all fallow lands in the Matara district under the Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu national food production drive launched by Home Affairs Minister and Nilwala River Redevelopment Committee Chairman Chandrasiri Gajadeera.

He made these observations addressing a ceremony held for the distribution of seed paddy for farmers at Akuressa at the Asmagoda Buddhist temple in Akuressa.

The lack of quality seed paddy has been the biggest problem facing the farmers.

A program is under way to start farms in the South by the Southern Provincial Agriculture Ministry to avert the difficult situation, he said. High quality seed paddy worth nearly Rs. 100,000 was distributed among 80 farmers at the ceremony by Ministers Gajadeera and Bindu Weerasinha.
