* Maha cultivation season will help IDPs to find
manual jobs
Around 9,300 IDPs went out of their welfare villages to see the outer
world enjoying their new freedom to move freely after six months as
early as six o’clock in the morning. But most returned to their zones
before mid day, Vavuniya District Secretary P.S. M. Charles told Daily
News yesterday.
There were around 700 to 800 IDPs from each zone who had opted to go
out but the rain hampered their enjoyment of moving freely though the
government provided around 25 buses for them to travel, she said.
The IDPs had gone out of their welfare centres for the first time.
Most probably they may have gone shopping or to see the outside world,
another officer said.
He said this was the Maha cultivation season and IDPs could find
manual jobs which will enable them to earn some money.
The government will increase the number of buses from tomorrow while
allowing the IDPs to move freely and had not set hard and fast rules for
them, another government official noted. |
