Large crowds throng Sri Pada as season begins

*Pilgrims flock in hundreds to Sri Pada on first day

The annual Sri Pada season began yesterday and will continue until the next Vesak Poya next year.

The vehicle carrying statues of the Buddha left Pelmadulla yesterday at 6 a.m. and passed through Avissawella, Karawanella, Yatiyantota, Kitulgala, Ginigathena, Diyagala Junction, Watawela, Hatton, Dickoya, Norwood Bridge, Kuda Maskeliya, Maskeliya, Mousakelle, Mohini-Ella, and reached Nalanthanniya Town, which is the last destination for the vehicle, at 4.30 a.m.

The statue of God Saman and idols of other deities were carried from there to the top of Sri Pada via Makarathorana, Seethaganguletenna and Idhikatupahana and placed on the Maluwa at 6.00 a.m. yesterday.
