NTV caters to English viewership

NTV, the English Channel of the National Rupavahini TV cluster
commenced with a live coverage from Cinnaman Grand Hotel on November 20,
highlighting its theme, 'entertainment.' Information and Mass Media
Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena graced the event as the Chief Guest.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, providing a message to the launch, noted
its relevancy to 2009 being named as the year of 'English and Computer
Science.' Kumar de Silva and Sharon Mascrennas compered the line-up of
performances, bringing on stage Umaria, Ashanti, Thriloka, Sohan
Weerasinghe, Damien Wickrematilleke, Anthonio's Dance Circle, Daddy,
Corrine, Dushyanth Weearaman and more, backed by the band Misty. NTV,
transmitted to the Western Province on frequency 52 UHF from 7 am to
midnight, with a chart show and two movies daily, aims at providing
infotainment to basically a western audience in news magazines, films,
dramas, documentaries and music, said NTV Director T.M.G. Chandrasekera.
Some of the current programs come from BBC, Channel France Information
and Deutsche Welle TV channels.
