A
lyricist is a master of using language. His use of language differs from
that of a linguist or a scientist. A lyrical composition should not only
be melodical but also meaningful and emotive.
A lyricist expresses his or her complex social or personal experience
in a beautiful composition selecting his language and metaphor with care
so as to create powerful images in the minds of the reader and listener.
Sunil Sarath Perera, a veteran lyricist with several decades of
experience is a superb master of language. His compositions are quite
popular. He analyses several popular lyrical compositions, including
some of his own in this collection.
The lyrics needs the support of the musician, the singer and the
orchestra to send his message to the audience.
Hence his job is a cooperative effort of different artistes. With the
introduction of modern technology he has to apply proper technology too
in bringing out his composition powerfully.
The language of compositionin a song has a direct relation with
mussic. Sunil Sarath Pera shows how language enhances music and the
latter influences the former.
The lyricist should know how t make use this mutual relation
positive. Besides there is also a music in the very thought process that
guides the lyricist.
This aspect has been well articulated by the writer through examples.
Chandraratne Manawasinghe, Ediriweera Sarachchandra and Siri Gunasinghe.
A lyricist is also a philosopher. He could express deep philosophical
concepts through the use of appropriate language and metaphor. To
illustrate this points he has devoted a chapter taking Iranian poets as
examples.
Besides a polemical chapter devoted to what is called Geya
Kavya, there is also a chapter on the patriotic radio songs.
The collection would be a useful guide amateur lyricists as it
discusses the various aspects of lyricism and gives a critical analysis
of diferent forms of lyricism.
