Writing children’s books is a difficult assignment. Writing poems for
children is still more difficult. It requires an ability to understand
the child’s mind. As seen from his book Gee Rala Pela poetry writing
comes to Bandara Pilawala with ease.
With a good command of the language and an understanding of the
psychology of children, he has used both appropriate language choosing a
simple style and vocabulary common among children to compose a poetry
book that is definitely alluring. Beautiful illustrations by V P Sunil
Shantha make the book more attractive to the young and even adults.
Pilawala has drawn extensively from rural folk culture and tradition in
the composition of most of the poems in the book.
Visharada Edward Jayakody with his tunes has converted each poem into
a beautiful song. Poems in the book remind even the adults of one’s
childhood as the similarity of some of his compositions with popular
nursery rhymes is so close.
Bandara Pilawala, Edward Jayakody and Sunil Shanta should be
commended for producing a high quality poetry book for our children
starved of good literature.
In an age where even those who produce literary works for children
are motivated by mercenary interests Bandara Pilawala displays rare
humanism in his work.
