SMEs the backbone in Sri Lanka
SMEs are not only the backbone in our country but also in developed
countries such as Germany, Japan and many other countries in the region
said FCCISL (SMED) Director, Renuka Rodrigo.
SMEs, the backbone in Sri Lanka and other developed countries. |
She was speaking at the UNESCAP National Workshop on SME value chains
in Sri Lanka at the Galle Face Hotel.
Academia, Government and industries must come together to support the
SME sector by providing them an environment to be sustainable in their
businesses to reach new markets. Their business development should be
combined with technology and innovation, she said.
Some Sri Lankan SMEs have successfully expanded their business to
other countries, but many others cannot do this alone.
Therefore, the FCCISL together with the Ministry of Enterprise
Development and Investment Promotion and the University of Moratuwa,
creates that environment, for South Asian SMEs effective penetration in
regional and global markets, through SME Value Chains, Rodrigo said.
The objective of this project is to conduct a national study for Sri
Lanka within the perspective of the overall project in developing action
plans for the improvement of business environment for SMEs in reaching
regional and global markets through the identification of opportunities
in strengthening SMEs export potential for a joint action program,
Rodrigo said.
