FAO Seminar discusses food security
Chile: Guaranteeing food security in times of crisis is one of main
challenges faced by governments in the region, agreed delegates
attending an ongoing seminar on transference programs in Chile.
The seminar "Conditional Transference Programs in times of Crisis,"
organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), discussed
programs of food security to face economic and food crisis.
Coordinator of the Latin America, Caribbean Zero Hunger Initiative,
Juan Carlos Garcia Cebolla, said the meeting aimed at finding ways to
reduce the impact of the crisis on poorer people in the region through
transference programs.
FAO Regional Representative Jose da Silva Graziano noted that those
governments having social support networks and transference programs
"have had a significant advantage when it comes to react effectively to
the crisis." Participants include Social Action Minister Paulino Caceres
(Paraguay); Deputy Minister and Social Development Coordinator Mauricio
Leon (Ecuador); Director of CEPAL Economic Development Department
Osvaldo Kacef and World Food Program Regional Deputy Director Jaime
Vallaure, among other representatives from 12 countries. Santiago,
