Ananda to fete IGP
New IGP Mahinda Balasooriya will be feted at Ananda College, Colombo
on November 9 (Monday) at 7 a.m. This ceremony has been organized by the
Ananda College Old Boys’ Association.
The new IGP is a member of the Executive Committee of the OBA.
Shakthi Dance Festival
Shakthi Dance Festival, a collaboration of classical, folk and
contemporary dance forms will be held today and tomorrow at 6.30 p.m. at
the Ramakrishna Mission, Wellawatte.
Over 50 dance acts reflecting various cultures will be staged during
this festival.
South Indian Dance gurus Padmashri Chitra Visweswaran, Padmashri
Meenaksi Chithranjan and Kelaimamani Gopika Verma will participate.
Admission is free.
Tourism and migration awards
Tourism and Migration Awards Presentation Ceremony - 2009 held
annually to select the outstanding persons in the tourism sector will be

Ceremony to fete Minister Kumaratunga
Land and Land Development Minister and actor Jeevan Kumaratunga who
celebrates his silver jubilee in the silver screen will be felicitated
at a function at the National Youth Services Council auditorium,
Maharagama today. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara will be the chief guest. A

Sanghika dana in Kelaniya
A sanghika dana to mark the fourth anniversary of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa assuming office as President will be held at the Kelaniya Raja
Maha Viharaya on November 18.
The event has been organized by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Kelaniya
Branch, Labour Minister and SLFP organizer for Kelaniya Electorate
Mervyn Silva said in a press release.

Wanted man shot dead
A notorious underworld figure wanted for a score of murder cases was
shot dead by police in self defence when he attempted to strangle an
Inspector of Police in Ganewatte yesterday evening.
Suraj Danushka who was wanted in connection with a double murder in
Kurunegala was under police custody, police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal
Mediwake said. When an investigation team from the Wellawa police
escorted Danushka to collect evidence and identify other suspects who
had close links to the double murder in Kurunegala, the suspect
strangled the Inspector of Police with his handcuffs on, at the time.
"The IP lost control and the vehicle had fallen into a ditch. Police
shot at the underworld gangster to protect the Inspector's life, he

Teen falls to his death

A teenage boy was killed after falling from a tree in Bambawa,
Galewela. Police Spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said Hashan
Kumaratunga (15) was employed by an Electricity Board contractor to
clear destructions caused by branches of trees.
"While Kumaratunga was cutting a branch from a tree he fell down and
died on admission to the Galgamuwa Hospital around 2.45 p.m." The
incident occurred on Thursday. The deceased was a resident of Millawana,
Galgamuwa. Galgamuwa Police is investigating.

German Book Marks launched - Goethe
Institut Director (German Embassy cultural arm) Richard Lang
hands over a couple of books to Moratuwa University Deputy Vice
Chancellor Prof. Niranjan Gunewardene to signal the launch of
‘German Book Marks’. The program launched by Goethe expects to
provide highly valued educational books to libraries of higher
educational institutes in the country. The Goethe donated books
to the value of over Rs. 500,000 to the Moratuwa University.
