The Court of Appeal yesterday put off the writ application
challenging the election of the Secretary and the Treasurer to the
National Olympic Committee (NOC), for November 25.
The respondents including the Sports Minister and the Ministry
Secretary, the NOC President and its Executive Committee members raised
objections to the application and the interim orders.
Petitioner former NOC Secretary H.U. Silva filed the application
seeking to quash the election of Secretary Chandana Perera and Treasurer
Maxell Perera at the NOC's AGM which was held on July 30.
He stated that the two officers had no legal authority to function in
their official capacities, since their election was not constitutional.
The petitioner also sought to hold the election according to the
constitution of the NOC. The petitioner further wanted an interim order
preventing them from functioning in their official capacities.
M.A. Sumanthiran appeared for the petitioner.
State Counsel Murthi Fernando appeared for respondents. |
