Cataract, diabetes lead in vision loss

Opthalmology services

Cataracts and complications of diabetes are the leading causes of vision loss and blindness in Sri Lanka,

The findings of Health and Nutrition Ministry eye health surveys have also revealed that 160,000 children in the country suffer from vision impairment, while 450,000 children suffer from ocular diseases.

This is particularly disappointing because 75 per cent of the vision loss is preventable by timely and cost effective treatment, according to eye health researchers. Besides the Government provides opthalmology services to the public free.
