US Report: Government response after Committee findings

Minister
Mahinda Samarasinghe

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday appointed a high profile committee headed by President Counsel D.S. Wijesinghe to look into the US State Department report on Incidents During the Recent Conflict in Sri Lanka, Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

Minister Samarasinghe said the Government will respond to the US State Department report based on the report of this impartial committee. The committee report is expected to be presented to the President before December 31. The Minister was addressing a special press briefing at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

The Minister stressed that the Government has nothing to hide and this impartial committee has been empowered to look into the allegations levelled in the Congress report.

This committee comprises President’s Counsels Nihal Jayamanna, C.R. De Silva, Attorney at Law Mano Ramanathan and Jezima Ismail.

The committee has been empowered to obtain any information from government institutions or officials pertaining to the incidents in the Congress report.

The Minister said the Committee will study the incidents outlined in the US State Department report closely and the Government will respond to the US report based on the outcome of the Committee.

He said the Committee has been given full freedom to impartially investigate these incidents and make their observations before December 31. “The image of the country is more important. We as a Government are committed to protect the image of the country,” he said.
