Five more de-mining machines arrive

The Government yesterday imported five de-mining machines at a cost
of Rs. 250 million from Slovakia to accelerate de-mining process and the
resettlement in the North.

Northern Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri told the Daily News
that the Government purchased these five machines to assist in
expediting the resettlement process of Internally Displaced People (IDPs)
living in relief villages in Vavuniya.
The machines which were airlifted to the island yesterday were handed
over to the Governor G.A. Chandrasiri at the Bandaranaike International
Airport.
He said that the Security Forces have already completed the de-mining
in the area spanning to 59 square-kilometers in Sahal Neliya of Yodha
Wewa. “We have already commenced to resettle displaced people in this
area,” he said.
At present 14 de-mining machines have been deployed to remove
landmines buried in the north. The Engineering Unit of Sri Lanka Army is
currently engaged in de-miming in Viduithalathivu area. “Once the
de-mining process is over in Viduithalathivu area, the fishing community
will be resettled in their native places,” he said.
