Rape case: Man gets two years jail
Kapila Somaratne Panadura group corr.
Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Malanee Gunaratne imposed a two
year jail sentence suspended for 10 years on an accused in a rape case.
The Judge also fined him and ordered the accused to pay Rs. 50,000 to
the complainant. A further one year imprisonment was imposed in default
of the compensation payment.
Applications called for training course
Applications are called for the enrolment of students to follow the
training course in Batik and Wall painting conducted by the National
Crafts Council Janakala Centre.
Those between 17 and 35 years of age can apply for this free six
month course and students from distant places will be provided with
lodging.

A free one day workshop style seminar on Computer Graphic Designing

The World Science Day 2009 schools program will be held at the main

Training course
The Certified Lead Auditors Training Course on EMS (ISO 14001) will
be held from November 2 to 6 at Gregory Room, Taj Samudra Hotel,
Colombo.
CARN conference
Ven. Mawila Anomadassi Thera, Sinhala instructor of Minuwangoda
Educational Zone will present a symposium on Action Research and
Buddhism at the Collaborative Action Research Network Conference (CARN)
at the University of Peloponnese, Athens, Greece. The symposium began
yesterday and will be held until November 1.
Islamic lecture
An Islamic lecture organized by Dharunnadhvah Lilkhairiyath, an
Association of Muslim Men and Boys, on 'Islamic solutions for
contemporary problems' by Moulavi M. Murshid Mulaffer will be held on
November 2, immediately after Luhar prayers at Al- Ma'hadul Bukhariyul

Art exhibition
A solo art exhibition 'Reflection of Art' by Sabeena Dawood organized
under the co-operation of the Ceylon Society of Arts will be held on
November 6-8 at the West Wing of the National Art Gallery, Colombo.
Shraddhanjalee
The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation will present composer, poet and freelance journalist W.K.
Sarath Wimalasiri over the Shraddhanjalee Program from noon to 12.45
p.m. on November 2.
He will make an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based
on various themes that come in Buddhist Literature. He will present his
views on lyrics, singing and music on topics under discussion. The
program is produced by Visharada Rohana Dharmakeerthi and presented by
Dilka Handuwala.
Arrested for alleged molestation
W.C.B. Fernando, Puttalam Group Corr.
A 52-year-old father of four was arrested by Chilaw police for
allegedly trying to molest a nine-year-old girl. The arrest followed a
complaint made by the girl's aunt who is her guardian.
Investigations revealed that the man had lured the girl to a lonely
place and tried to forcibly molest her. The girl had managed to escape
and rush home and complain to her elders.
Police conducting investigations had referred the girl to the Chilaw
JMO for a medical examination and report.
Eleventh delegates conference
The 11th delegates conference of the United Socialist Party will be
held at the Ratmalana Kamkaru Sevana auditorium on October 31 and
November 1.

Six Indian companies supplying
pharmaceuticals to the public health sector were asked by the
Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry to provide their explanation
about the inferior quality and contaminated drugs detected at
some hospitals recently. A committee of professionals was
appointed by Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva. The Indian companies sent their representatives to the
inquiry held at the National Pharmaceuticals Cosmetics and

Auditor-General S. Swarnajothi presents
the report on the discharge of the duties and functions of the
Auditor-General in accordance with Article 154 (6) of the
Constitution for 2008 to be tabled in Parliament to Speaker W.
J. M. Lokubandara.
