Fishermen arrested

At least 23 fishermen were arrested and three boats were seized by police in the seas off Beruwela yesterday morning as they were engaged in fishing with prohibited fishing nets.

Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said acting on information Beruwela police raided a cluster of three boats engaged in the illegal fishing method (light house method) using prohibited fishing nets. "The raid was carried out between 8.30am to 9.30am in the seas off Beruwela", he added.

Police arrested 23 suspects and seized three boats, a lorry and prohibited fishing nets and other equipment. Beruwela police are investigating.
