Lankan schools have largest number of students

Education Minister Susil Premjayantha, speaking at a computer unit opening ceremony at Kaduwela Kothalawala Maha Vidyalaya and at Munidasa Cumarathunge Vidyalaya on Tuesday said only in Sri Lanka we have a school that has the largest number of students in the world.

Speaking further the Minister said the ideal number of students in a school should be around 1,500 and each class should have an average of 30 students.

Nowhere in the world has a school which has move than 2,000 students on roll.

However we have schools with more than 5,000 students. The total number of students in each class plays an important part in the quality of education, Minister said.

Commenting on Grade five scholarship grants, the Minister said that 30,000 students received such grants and this included 25,000 Sinhala medium and 5,000 Tamil medium students.

This exam has become socialised as the 'pass' ones and 'failed' ones. However this exam is purely aimed at ensuring a good school to those students faced with difficulties.

He said he has instructed Examinations Commissioner to issue a merit certificate to all students who obtain more than 80 marks as cut off marks.
