Lankan schools have largest number of students
Education Minister Susil Premjayantha, speaking at a computer unit
opening ceremony at Kaduwela Kothalawala Maha Vidyalaya and at Munidasa
Cumarathunge Vidyalaya on Tuesday said only in Sri Lanka we have a
school that has the largest number of students in the world.
Speaking further the Minister said the ideal number of students in a
school should be around 1,500 and each class should have an average of
30 students.
Nowhere in the world has a school which has move than 2,000 students
on roll.
However we have schools with more than 5,000 students. The total
number of students in each class plays an important part in the quality
of education, Minister said.
Commenting on Grade five scholarship grants, the Minister said that
30,000 students received such grants and this included 25,000 Sinhala
medium and 5,000 Tamil medium students.
This exam has become socialised as the 'pass' ones and 'failed' ones.
However this exam is purely aimed at ensuring a good school to those
students faced with difficulties.
He said he has instructed Examinations Commissioner to issue a merit
certificate to all students who obtain more than 80 marks as cut off
marks. |
