Army exhibition begins today

The Sri Lanka Army exhibition to mark its 60th anniversary will start today at the BMICH with President Mahinda Rajapaksa ceremonially inaugurating the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open for the public from 12.30 p.m to 10 p.m today and it will be open for the public from 10 am to 10 p.m each day from October 4 to 7. Tickets for the exhibition will be sold at Rs.50.

Forest Ranger in trouble

A Forest Ranger who tried to lend a helping hand to a suspect arrested on the charge of illegal sand mining for a fee, has been taken into custody by bribery sleuths. The Ranger was arrested at a hotel in Madagalla, Polpithigama while accepting a part of the solicited bribe (Rs.15000), acting investigations officer of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Sarath Somaweera Lokuge said.

He had first demanded Rs.100,000 from the illegal sand miner and after some negotiations the amount had come down to Rs.50,000. The officer was arrested as he was claiming the first part of the bribe at the hotel, Lokuge added.


Nothing wrong in Rubella vaccine

Nothing has happened to any child after receiving Rubella vaccine. Some children from Dambulla area were admitted to hospital after they complained about a faintness but none had any complications and they were discharged from the hospital, Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.

He said around 11 schoolchildren from Dambulla area were admitted to hospital after complaining about faintness. It is discovered that other children got the feeling after one child complained about discomfort. All of them were discharged from the hospital. According to the spokesman there is nothing wrong in the Rubella vaccine and parents should not fear about children receiving the vaccine.


Body of male washes ashore

An unidentified body of a male aged about 35 years was washed ashore at Karukupuna Bangadeniya yesterday, Chilaw police said.

Police conducting investigations seek public information to identify the body.


Armed Services Remembrance Day 2009

Armed Services Remembrance Day to commemorate fallen heroes who laid their lives in the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is held annually at the Cenotaph Vihara, Maha Devi Park, Colombo 07 will be held at 9 a.m. on November 08, 2009.


Russian relief for IDPs

A special plane carrying a stock of humanitarian aid valued at Rs. 70 million from the Russian Federation for displaced persons in Sri Lanka will arrive at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport on October 7.

The donation which includes food, medicine and vital medical equipment has been made by the Russian Federation in response to a request made by the Sri Lankan Government in furtherance of bilateral relations between the two countries.


South West monsoon brings more rain

The South West monsoon wind flow had become stronger due to cyclonic weather patterns in the Pacific ocean resulting in the winds feeding the flow across Sri Lanka becoming stronger creating gusty winds and rain, weather forecaster of the Meteorology Department Deepika Jayakody said.

A traditional Sri Dalada Pooja organised by Ven. Seeduwe Sumanawansa thera, Deputy Lekakhadhikari of the All Island Sasanarakshake Mandalaya will be held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Kandy on October 5 and 6.

The program on October 5 will include an Atavisi Buddha and bodhi pooja to invoke blessings on the President, Defence Secretary, Security Forces Chiefs, IGP and the people and transfer merit on departed war heroes at the Natha Devalaya Viharaya at 5 pm, a Gilanpasa buddha pooja at the Dalada Maligawa at 7.

The program on October 6 will include a kiripidu buddha pooja to the Sacred Tooth Relic at 6 am, a Malpahan buddha pooja at 10 am and a Sanghika dana to 100 bhikkhus at the Sri Dalada Maligawa at 11 a.m.


Kidney patient seeks help

M.M.Rinooz, 31, is suffering from an acute kidney disease. He developed side effects after a kidney transplant surgery in November 2004. Now he is on a regular twice a week Haemodialisis, which should be continued until he will have another kidney transplant, according to Consultant Nephrologist C.A. Herath of Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital.

The hospital says his treatment costs about Rs.33,600 per month. Rinooz pleads donors to help him continue the medical treatment. He is also appealing for someone to donate an A positive or O positive kidney.

Financial contributions should be made to A/C No.3701523 of Bank of Ceylon, Yatiyanthota Branch under M.H.N. Rizana.
