One killed, child injured in truck-train crash


The vehicle which was hit by the train dragged on for more than 100 metres away damaging several unauthorised houses constructed by the side of the rail track.

A 58-year-old driver was killed and a 12-year-old child seriously injured yesterday morning when a truck crossing at an unprotected level crossing at Devananda road, Maharagama collided with a Colombo bound train plying on the Kelani Valley line.

The vehicle which was hit by the train dragged on for more than 100 metres away damaging several unauthorised houses constructed by the side of the rail track. A 12-year-old child living in one of these houses who was badly injured was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital. Two others sustained minor injuries. The driver has been identified as Ariyadasa, a contractor by profession.
