Timely action averts robbery

A major robbery was averted and four armed suspects arrested in Meegahathenna, Kalutara due to timely action taken on information by Police Intelligence Unit yesterday.

Robbers who were waiting to rob a vehicle in Meegahathenna area were arrested by police around 3.10 a.m., police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said. “The suspects were waiting to rob Rs.500,000 from a person who was coming in the vehicle”, he added.

A special team from Western Province Intelligence Unit on information provided from a reliable source nabbed the suspects. “We have prevented a serious crime by timely acting on information”, the SDIG told the Daily News.

He said a shot gun, four ammunition, a kris knife, a toy pistol and a trishaw were recovered from the robbers.

Initial inquiries disclosed that the group was acting in the area for a long time and committed several crimes.
