Mom, daughter missing

Kalupahana Liyanage Kumudunee, wife of Vadivel Sukumar of 263,
Kaliyam Mahara, Piliyandala and their daughter Mawsha Vadivel Sukumar
have been missing since August 22.
Kumudunee is 33 years, five feet in height, fair in complexion and is
lean.
Mawsha is five years, three feet and medium built. Contact the
Women’s and Children’s Bureau, Colombo on 2444444 if their whereabouts
are known.
Advisory committee appointed
A three member Advisory Committee has been appointed by the Social
Service and Social Welfare Ministry to give advice to public utility and
service centres regarding alteration needed to make their offices and
service units easily accessible to disabled persons.
The Committee comprises Chartered Architect Harsha Fernando,
Chartered Quantity Surveyor MC Mendis and Cyril Siriwardena. A press
release said gazette notice of October 17, 2006 containing access order
No. 146/15 of The Protection of Disabled Persons' Rights Act No. 25
makes it mandatory for all public institutions and offices to comply
with these requirements within three years of the publication of the
gazette notice.
Eighteen fishermen held

The Navy nabbed four Indian fishing trawlers illegally poaching on
local territorial waters in Thalaimannar on Thursday and arrested 18
Indian fishermen. Navy spokesman Captain D.K.P. Dassanayake said the
Navy arrested four Indian trawlers that illegally entered local waters
near Thalaimannar.
"Seventeen Indian fishermen and the trawlers have been taken into
custody," he added.
Lecturer dies in accident

A lecturer attached to the Engineering faculty of the Peradeniya
University died of critical injuries sustained after being knocked down
by a train. The incident took place at around 2.30 p.m. on Friday. The
deceased has been identified as Sanjeewa Kularatne (36) a University
lecturer. He was hit by the train plying between Kandy and Polgahawela.
Village level milk chilling centres set up
Milco company which comes under the Livestock Development Ministry
has taken steps to set up village level milk chilling centres throughout
the island.
Such centre was set up at Liyanwala, Walapone in Nuwara Eliya
district recently at a cost of Rs. 1.5 million by Livestock Development
Minister C. B. Ratnayake.
This milk chilling centre with a capacity of 500 litres will benefit
nearly 75 families attached to Liyanwala Milk Producers Society.
It is hoped that these chilling centres will prevent the wastage of
milk at village level while ensuring an increased collection of milk to
the national milk production.
Minister Muralitharan sustains minor injuries

Muralitharan sustained minor injuries following a road accident that
took place in Colombo last evening. The bullet proof vehicle in which
the Minister was travelling collided with a passenger bus when the
Minister was returning to Colombo from Vavuniya.
Due to the accident two others including a personal body guard and
the driver sustained minor injuries. Sources said Minister Muralitharan
was resting at his residence after the incident.
Safari park in Hambantota
Work on the 500 acre Safari Park at Ridiyagama, Hambantota planned by
the Zoological Gardens Department is due to be completed next year. Work
on the proposed electric fence, boundary wall and the road network is
now in progress at an accelerated pace, said the Government Information
Department in a press release. The release said the park will have six
different zones for animal species from Sri Lanka and foreign countries
and facilities for visitors to undertake safaris with safety.
Illicit cattle transporters fined

Fines totalling Rs. 51,500 were imposed on three persons found guilty
of transporting 12 head of cattle without a permit by Kandy Magistrate
Sumudu Premachandra. The Judge also ordered police to confiscate the
animals. Kandy police prosecuted.
Several explosive devices recovered
Several explosive devices and accessories were found by the Police on
Saturday at a house located in Melfred Crescent, in Dehiwela.
A remote control device, a receiver, six timers, four power boosters,
two large timers, a canvas belt and 43 electric detonators has been
recovered which were buried in front of the house.The recovery was made
by the State Intelligence Service and the Dehiwela Police.
The Police are investigating, Police Spokesman Senior DIG Nimal
Mediwake said.
Eid prayers
Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers for females will commence at 8 am at the Nawala
Jumma Mosque conducted by Al Haj Mowlavi M.B.M Mubarak (Falahi).
Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers for males will commence at 8.15 am conducted by Al
Haj Mowlavi S. M. M. Jahila (Bari).
Centenary celebrations
The 100th Anniversary Celebrations of Sivali Central College,
Ratnapura will be held today. This ceremony will be marked by a
felicitation ceremony on war heroes. Nearly 200 old boys of this college
who are war heroes will also be felicitated. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya
Rajapaksa will preside.
The five day centenary celebrations will conclude on September 25.
Lakshmi pooja ceremony
Sri Lakshmi pooja ceremony to mark the traditional Nawarathri
Festival will be held on September 23 at 6.30 p.m. at the official
residence of the Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka.
National youth Musical show
The National Youth Musical show organised by the Wester Musical Unit
of the Aesthetic Section of the Education Ministry will be held on
September 21 at 6.00 p.m. at the main hall, Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
It will be presided over by Education Minister Susil Premajayanth.
Envoys from Japan and Norway will also participate.
Literary festival
The Literary Festival organised by Kalutara Divisional Secretariat,
under the direction of Divisional Secretary of Kalutara Sirisoma
Lokuvithana will be held at the Kalutara Secretariat Auditorium on
September 24.
There will be awarding of ‘Abhinandana’ awards to six artistes who
contributed for the development of cultural activities in the division.
The ‘Kalutota Rasa Kalasa’ the Annual Cultural Magazine will be
launched on this day.
Artist Jayalath Manoratna will deliver a literary talk.
