UN ‘historic meetings’ amid multiple crises
UN: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said here on Tuesday that the
United Nations is scheduled to convene a series of summit meetings
within next 10 days to deal with the global crises, such as climate
change and financial and economic crises, and he voiced his hope that
the upcoming summit meetings will be successful.
Ban, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua at the UN Headquarters in
New York, said that the United Nations will open a “very historic”
General Assembly (GA) session on Tuesday afternoon, the largest yet
summit in addressing climate change issues on Sept. 22, and
“encouraging” Security Council summit on non-proliferation and nuclear
disarmament on Sept. 24.
The 192-member world body is expected to convene these summit
meetings at a time that the world is still fighting the food, climate
change, flu and global financial and economic crises, which have
affected global efforts to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals.
