Minister refutes UNP Leader’s claims:

Donor funds used properly

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said the Government has ensured that the funds disbursed by the donor countries and lending agencies are properly utilised for the country’s development. He said the country has received over US$ 772 million up to September 15 and the Government is hopeful that this figure will rise to US$ 1,350 million by December.

The Minister refuted the UNP Leader’s allegations that the foreign funds disbursed by the donor countries and the lending agencies are being channelled in to the pockets of politicians. “The country has entered a new phase to bring the dividends of development to the people after the Security Forces eradicated terrorism. Minister Abeywardena stressed the people all over the country feel that the Government is for the development of the country. “Massive development projects are going on in each village and the villagers know better than any others how their villages are being developed by the Government,” he said.

The Japanese and Chinese Governments have provided over US$ 77.90 million and US$ 190.30 million this year.

India has secured the third place in extending financial assistance to Sri Lanka by providing over US$ 29.60 million upto September this year.

China provided US$ 60.05 million last year and it has been increased to US$ 77.90 by September this year.

The Indian Government extended financial assistance to the tune of US$ 0.54 million last year and their assistance has topped US$ 29.60 million by September 15.

Among the lending agencies, the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank are in the forefront in supporting Sri Lanka after the Government eradicated terrorism from the country.
