Eva Wanasundara acting AG
Additional Solicitor General S. Eva Wanasundera PC took oaths before
Chief Justice Ashoka de Silva as the acting Attorney General yesterday.
She will oversee the duties of the Attorney General Mohan Peries PC who
is out of the country to participate in the UN Human Rights Council
special meeting in Geneva.
An old girl of the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Wanasundara
became the first woman in the AG's Department to be conferred silk. She
joined the Department in 1979 after two year stint at the unofficial
bar.
Protest against private Radio
The Muslim community has protested to a private Radio station against
the broadcast of a program derogatory of the Prophet.
Western Province Governor S. Alavi Mowlana and Presidential Advisor
A.H.M. Azwer brought this to the notice to the management of this
private Radiostation and has alleged that this particular broadcast
during the 'Ifthar' time (break fast) has hurt the religious
susceptibilities of the Muslims.
They have pointed out that the 'Qadiyani' movement has been banned in
all Muslim countries. The All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama has also given a
Fathwa to this effect and this was recently handed over to the President
at Temple Trees.
Ekwemu Lanka in England
A get-together themed 'Ekwemu Lanka' and a musical evening for Sri
Lankans living in England organised by the 'Sri Lanka Jana Handa
Foundation' of Hunslow, England will be held at the Feltham Hall London
on October 10.
Jana Handa Foundation President Sri Lal Dias said British
Parliamentarians Des Brown, Keith Vaas, Allen Keith and Virendra Sharma
along with Hunslow County Council opposition leader Jagadeesh Sharma
will grace the occasion.
As such Sri Lankans living in England will gain an opportunity to
voice their immediate problems and seek solutions for them. The musical
evening will feature Sinhala and Tamil songs sung by vocalists Asanka
Priyamantha Pieris, Saman de Silva, Ishaq Baig, Vijith de Silva and
Tamil vocalist Mahinda Kumar. 'Sky High' Band led by Manjula Munasinghe
will provide the music and Asiri Bandara will be the compere.
Help save his life
Shane Kudagama (36) of 149/8, Shanthi Mawatha, Koswatta, Battaramulla
has been diagnosed with a tumour of the pituitary gland.
Kudagama is currently employed at The Video Team and he worked at
Film Location Services as Assistant Director.
He needs Rs. 750,000 for his brain surgery which can only be done at
Asiri Surgical Hospital which has to be raised within a short period.
Financial assistance from donors can remit to Bank of Ceylon account

Buddhist talk
Prof. Raja De Alwis will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in English on
"The Goal of Buddhist Meditation" at a meeting of the Servants of the
Buddha Society on Saturday September 19 at 4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall,
Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Launch of Das Kapital in Sinhala
The Sinhala edition of Karl Marx's Das Kapital volume I will be
launched at the Colombo Public Library today at 3.30 p.m. Prof. Desmond
Mallikarachichi, Department of Philosophy and Psychology, University of
Peradeniya will deliver a lecture on 'The Relevance of Das Kapital in
the Modern World' to mark the occasion.
Sanghinda English-Sinhala Dictionary
The Sanghinda English-Sinhala Dictionary compiled and edited by
Professor Sucharitha Gamlath will be launched on September 20 at 2.30 pm
at the BMICH, Colombo 7.
This Dictionary is the effort of Professor Gamlath for the last 25
years. It embraces over 500,000 words. The Dictionary contains over
100,000 newly invented Sinhala words.
The Dictionary has been published by Sanghinda Printers and
Publishers. It will be the biggest English-Sinhala Dictionary in Sri
Lanka, Publishers said.
Meditation program
Budu Suvanda Sila Bhavana, a meditation program by Ven. Kiribathgoda
Gnanananda Thera will be held at the ACBC Auditorium, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha, Colombo 7 on Saturday, September 19 from 7.30 am to 4 pm.

Gone missing
M.D. Sugathadasa of 6/21, Nadun Uyana, 7th Lane, Mahagama, Halpe,
Meerigama has complained that his son, daughter-in-law and their two
children have gone missing since May 17, 2007.
Any information leading to the whereabouts of these two children may
be passed onto phone number 2444444 of Children's and Women's Bureau,
Colombo.
FECS win Silver prize
The Ryutaro Hashimoto Asian-Pacific Forum for Environment and
Development, awarded the Silver prize for the program initiated by the
Federation of Electricity Consumer Society (FECS) in recognition of the
efforts of about 51,000 people who are associated with 200 independent
community hydro electricity schemes.
The 2009 Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED award ceremony was held recently in
Japan and the Gold prize was won by India for a self-employment project.
Ape Yatagiyawe Kathawa
The new classic 'Ape Yatagiyawe Kathawa' written by well-known author
Amara Hewamadduwa who is also a poet, critic and scholar, has been
published by Fast Ads Private Company Maradana.
Exhibition
The Old Boys Association of Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya, Bandarawatte in
Gampaha will hold an exhibition from September 23 to 25 at the school
premises.
Book launch
A book titled Maha Polawen Sandalutalayata (From the grass roots to
the apex of success) authored by Manjula Prabath Hettiarachchi will be
launched on September 17 coinciding with the National Literacy Month.
The book compiles the gripping tales of contemporary counts who
reached the zenith of success having imitativeness and
self-determination as the elementary source of capital.
The author of the book has written a series of life stories of
successful and leading businessmen in the country. He has selected 25
such stories to compile his book.
The book elaborates how these businessmen started from the scratch
and achieved success facing numerous challenges. The book is written to
appreciate their significant contribution to the society.
The objective of the book is to provide living examples from the
society and stimulate the youth to follow suit and also to give due
recognition for their achievements. He is a graduate in Mass
Communication of the Kelaniya University SJ.
Correction and Clarification

Deadly blow
Rafik JALALDEEN
A drunken man was killed by his drunken friend with a mammoty
following a heated argument in Rasnayake, Nikaweratiya.
Two friends had gone to consume moonshine which ended with a heated
argument police said.
"One man hacked to death his friend with a mammoty who died on the
spot," he added.
The victim was identified as W.A. Alfonza (56).
Over 1,400 IRCs in Kandy
Indika POLKOTUWA
The Kandy Police Division has recorded 1,465 Island Reconvicted
Criminals (IRCs) in the area, said SSP Ranjith Kasthuriratne.
Of them 891 had gone into hiding in other areas and 36 had been
imprisoned for various other crimes.
The data relating to IRCs is being computerised under a police
program to counter crimes.

The annual get-together of the Sri Lanka Air Force Retired Civil
Engineers' Division will be held at Jayamanne reception hall,
