Lankan attacked in Melbourne
Francis, a father of two who does not want to disclose his surname
for fear of reprisals, was waiting for a train at Berwick railway
station about 4.30am on Saturday when a cowardly attacker struck.
Security footage shows Francis's attacker approach him and engage in a
brief conversation before smashing the bottle against his head.
"When he walked close to me and sat next to me I never thought he was
a bad person," Francis said. "Suddenly he smashed a beer bottle on my
face and I was pouring with blood . . . and I fainted."
A shocked Francis, 34, can be seen slumped on the seat as his
attacker flees along the tracks with Francis's briefcase, containing a
laptop and cash.
Francis, an IT networking engineer who migrated from Sri Lanka last
year, said he was lucky not to have been blinded or killed.
"I was lucky it didn't go into my eye, if it had have hit the wrong
place it could have killed," he said.
