Felicitation ceremony
A felicitation ceremony in appreciation of the prolific writer and
artist Bhadraji Mahinda Jayatilaka will be held in Kandy at the Asgiriya
Maha Vihara-Pirivena Hall on September 16 from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00.
It is an admiration of the writings and creations of Bhadraji's books
based on Buddhist thought - the critical studies in translations and
originals plus the novels based on prince Siddhartha and the Buddha's
life and incidents. Bhadraji has published over twenty titles.
Golden eve
D.S. Senanayaka College Golden Eve 2009 will be held at the Bishop's
College Auditorium on September 18.
Help needed
S.A.B. Gamage aged 22 living in 54, Bomaluwa Road, Matale is
suffering from a brain tumour. Doctor Tissa Wickramasuriya advised him
to undergo an operation to remove the tumour.
In this connection he needs Rs. 700,000 for the operation. His
parents are unable to collect the money required. Therefore they seek
the public assistance to rescue their son.
They entreat to donors and philanthropists to send their assistance
to the savings account - 7331189 at Dambulla Branch BoC.
Shot while returning home
Rafik Jalaldeen
A businessman was shot dead by a suspect in Gonawela, Pannala on
Monday night, police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said. Dilip
Mendis Aberatne (27) was shot dead by a suspect from the same area
around 10.00 p.m. in Mediriwila, Gonawela. "The victim was on his way
home in Mediriwila when he was gunned down. The suspect who arrived in a
van blocked the victim and shot him dead on the spot," he added.
Pannala police is investigating.
Assessment of A/L answer scripts:
Second stage commences
The second stage of the assessment of G.C.E. Advanced Level
Examination answer scripts commenced yesterday and will be continued
till September 25. The assessment work done at 20 centres in 15 cities
is handled by a staff of over 6,000.
Examinations Commissioner General Anura Edirisinghe said, the first
stage of the assessment which began on August 30 concluded on Saturday,
September 13.
Get-together
The 105th Annual General Meeting and Get-together of Prince of Wales'
College Old Boys' Association will be held on September 19 at the
College Main Hall. The AGM will be held at 5 p.m. and will be followed
by the dinner and get-together from 9 p.m. onwards at Hotel Golden
Carriage, Uyana, Moratuwa.
BIDTI course
The Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI)
will start its next certificate course in Diplomacy on October 19 2009.

Biennial meeting
Professor J.N. Oleap Fernando, Honorary Dean of the College of
Chemical Sciences and Past President of the Institute of Chemistry
Ceylon has left the island to participate in the biennial gathering of
Chemists in the Australian region is being held from September 12 to 16
at Shanghai, China.
Perahera
The first Randoli Perahera of the Sri Natha Devale, Dodangoda will be
held on September 15 and will continue till September 20. The grand
finale will be the Day Perahera on September 21.
AGM
The fiftieth Annual General Meeting of the Society of Structural
Engineers Sri Lanka (SSESL) will be held at the Colombo Hilton Hotel on
September 15 at 4.30 p.m.
Four eminent engineers would be honoured with the Honorary Fellowship
of the society. The Guest Speaker will be Dr. A.C. Visvalingam who will
talk on "The Status of Engineers in Society."
Literary festival
The literary festival organised by Mundalama Divisional Secretariat
and the Cultural Department will be held at Madurankuliya Model School
on September 18 at 9 a.m. onwards.
Id-Ul-Fitr prayers
"As usual Suddooqul Birr Foundation has made arrangements to conduct
Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadhan Festival) prayers at the Stanley Jansz Park, (Meti

Buddhist Panel discussion
"The next Buddhist public panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will
be on Sunday, September 20 at 10 a.m. at its Borella building on "Living
the Dhamma."
The Panellists are Dhamma Weerakoon and Asoka Mahinda Jayasinha with
Rajah Kuruppu as moderator.
Kokila shines in China
Child actor Kokila Jayasuriya who played the main role in Somaratna
Dissanayaka's film Siri Raja Siri won the best actor award at the 10th
International Children's Film Festival which concluded in Qingdao, in
Phoenix Island in China on September 13. This is the 6th international
award won by the film Siri Raja Siri which was represented at the
festival in China by Producer Renuka Balasuriya and the actor Kokila.
Jaffna Education Fair today
Irangika Range
The Jaffna Education Fair, (JEF) one of the leading education
exhibitions in Sri Lanka will commence at 10 a.m. today under the
patronage of Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas
Devananda and Northern Governor Major General G.A.Chandrasiri at Jaffna
Central College.
This first ever large scale education exhibition will conclude on
September 16. In addition to local educational institutions several
foreign companies too will take part in the Fair.
