Cement at Rs 720 from BMCs

The Government will release sufficient stocks of cement to the market from next week stipulating a lowest price of Rs.720 per bag (50kg) through the Building Materials Corporations across the country as a relief measure to consumers.

Though the Government has stipulated Rs.785 as a maximum retail price for a 50 kilo cement bag, under this relief measure, consumers can purchase a 50 kilo cement pack at Rs. 720 which is almost a Rs. 65 price reduction on each pack, Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardene told the media yesterday.

He said that there was a huge demand for cement in the country due to a number of development projects taking place in the North and East under the Uthuru Vasanthaya and Negenahira Udanaya.

Therefore, with the implementation of this timely decision taken by the Government, work in the construction industry will be immensely expedited.

The Minister said the wholesale price of a 50kg cement pack will be Rs.680.
