Army-CH game - pick of the Clifford Cup quarter finals

The confrontation between Army and CH and FC at Longden Place on
August 23 (Sunday) is the pick of the four quarter-final matches of the
Caltex knock-out rugby tournament for the Clifford Cup. The soldiers won
the first round game by 21-12 at Police Park while CH and FC won the
return match by 43-20 at Maitland Crescent and a close tussle for
supremacy can be expected when these two teams clash for the third time.
Runners up of the Caltex ‘A’ Division League CR and FC will confront
Plate champions, Police, in the curtain-raiser of the tournament on
August 21 (Friday) at Longden Place while the high riding Navy Sports
Club will take on Air Force on August 22 (Saturday) at Longden Place.
Defending champions Kandy Sports Club will play host to Havelocks on
August 23 at Nittawela. The semi-finals will be worked off on August 29
(Longden Place) and August 30 (Nittawela) with the final scheduled for
September 5 at Nittawela or Longden Place.
Kandy Sports Club have reigned supreme by clinching the Clifford Cup
on 14 occasions since winning it for the first time in 1992 but face a
strong challenge from CR and FC and Navy. The Red Shirts have bagged the
trophy 14 times with their last win in 2006. The sailors who are
enjoying a fine season by finishing third in the Caltex ‘A’ Division
league have entered the final twice in 1976 (losing to Havelocks 3-15)
and 1989 (losing to CR (3-6).

(c) Kandy SC vs Havelocks at Nittawela on August 23.
(d) Army vs CH and FC at Longden Place on August 23.

(e) Winner of (a) vs winner of (b) at Longden Place on August 29.
(f) Winner of (c) vs winners of (d) at Nittawela on August 30.
Final on September 5 at
