SPC elections Postal voting extended

The Postal Voting application closing date which was set to expire at mid-night today, has been extended till midnight August 25. The decision has been taken to provide more time for prospective applicants who wish to use the facility to vote at the upcoming Southern Provincial Council elections to forward their applications, a press release from the Election Secretariat said.

It stated: It is specially notified that at this election officers in essential services, personnel in the three Armed Services and the Police and officers and staff serving in the three administrative, Districts in the Province who are likely to be deployed for election duty are entitled to apply for postal voting.

"State officers who are registered as voters in the Southern Province but serving elsewhere in the Island cannot be afforded the facility to vote by post and therefore, they should not apply for this facility. They could apply for leave in terms of Section 123 of the Provincial Councils Elections Act. No. 2 of 1988.

Officers certifying postal votes applications should personally examine applications before they certify applications for postal voting.

They are requested to transmit all the certified applications immediately to the Returning Officer of the District to reach him by 1200 midnight on 28th August 2009. Applications received after the last date will be rejected," the release said.
