Heavy fines on motorcyclist

Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe imposed a fine of Rs. 19,500 on a motor cyclist of Wadduwa who pleaded guilty of riding a motorcycle and causing injuries to a pedestrian after knocking him down on the Galle Road.

The accused had no driving licence revenue and insurance certificates. Wadduwa Police Traffic Branch prosecuted.


Pepper in tea lands

A project has been implemented to grow pepper in tea lands in the Pathadumbara, Panvila and Medamahanuvara Agrarian Services Division by the Export Agriculture Department.

Under this project, pepper saplings which were supplied free to cultivator by the Department.

 


Boost for b’onions

Arrangements have been made by the Matale district agriculture office to expand the big onion cultivations in the area under its purview.

Accordingly the third and fourth stages of the Minipe project are to be utilised. In the first round the demonstrations will be commenced with the participation of the farmers.

This program is being implemented in Malyaya, Gageyaya and Godamunna areas.

All necessary assistance will be provided by the Agriculture Department.


Socialist Alliance meeting

A public meeting of the Socialist Alliance will be held today at 4pm at the Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo 7 to commemorate the Hartal of 1953, the Media Co-ordinator of the Alliance, L.R. Stephen said.

The following are scheduled to address the meeting: Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Science and Technology Minister and leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party Prof. Tissa Vitharana and Leader of the Democratic Left Front Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

The meeting will be presided over by General Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Wimalasiri de Mel.


Bridge on verge of collapse

The bridge across the Batatota Oya on the Madavala-Sirimalwatta road in the Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha area is on the verge of collapse.

Motorists are unable to use this bridge as a result.


Loans for farmers

The Commercial Crop (Spices) Development Project in the Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat area, with the assistance of the Kandurata Development Bank, Wattegama has introduced a loan scheme to encourage farmers to take to growing commercial crops.

Under the scheme loans not exceeding Rs. 50,000 will be granted at very low interest rates.


Nanuoya - Colombo train to ply daily

The intercity express train to Nanuoya that was running only on weekends as a temporary measure will run daily between Colombo and Nanuoya, Sri Lanka Railways said in a press release yesterday.

The train will leave Colombo at 8.35 a.m. and reach Nanuoya at 2.10 p.m. It will leave Nanuoya at 3.15 p.m and reach Colombo Fort at 9.00 p.m. daily, the release said.
