Wind power plants in Puttalam to set up

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka granted investment approval to four companies for investments worth US $ 68 million. Chairman/Director General Dhammika Perera signed the agreements on behalf of the BOI and presented the BOI Certificate of Registration to the investors.

Two investment agreements worth US $ 37 million were signed with Vidatamunai Wind Power (Pvt.) Ltd and Seguwantivu Wind Power (Pvt.) Ltd. The companies will set up two wind power plants at Vidatamunai and Seguwantivu in Puttalam. Akbar Brothers, Hirdaramani Group and Debug Computers are the main promoters of the venture. The two wind power plants will supply 20 megawatts of power to the national grid. The ventures will utilise 13 and 12 wind turbines imported from Spain at Vidatamunai and Seguwantivu.

Director of the companies Asgi Akbarali said that wind power is a green energy and will not affect the environment. When the power plants are completed these will be the only wind power plants that are operational in Sri Lanka.

Directors of Vidatamunai Wind Power (Pvt) Ltd and Seguwantivu Wind Power (Pvt) Ltd Asgi Akbarali and Moiz Najimudeen signed the agreements. CEO Manjula Perera was also present at the occasion.

The BOI also signed agreements with Rank Container Terminals (Pte) Ltd and Blue Star Constructions (Pvt) Ltd.

Investment agreement worth US $ 6.5 million was signed with Rank Container Terminals (Pvt) Ltd for a dry port project. The project is to construct and operate a dry port at Orugodawatta.

The venture sponsored by Rank Holdings is expected to create employment for a workforce of 250. The venture will provide facilities for the Sri Lanka Customs to examine all inbound cargo from the terminal. The company will provide railway infrastructure to transport cargo from the Colombo port to the terminal. With this venture container traffic in the Colombo area is expected to be reduced. Ravi Wijeratne said that this is the first container freight station in Sri Lanka. The terminal is constructed in a ten acre land and will provide facilities to examine 250 containers at any given time.

Chairman Ravi Wijeratne and Director of Rank Container Terminals (Pvt) Ltd Wasantha De Silva signed the agreement on behalf of the company.

Blue Star Constructions signed an agreement to construct a residential complex at Rajagiriya. The residential complex is an investment of US $ 25 million sponsored by investors from Iran. The complex will include 240 apartments in three towers constructed in a 180 perch land. The residential apartments are targeted for middle and high income sectors. The company will commence construction shortly and is expected to complete construction within two half Years.

Managing Director of Blue Star Construction (Pvt) Ltd A.M. Almoti signed the agreement on behalf of the company.
