Multi-cultural show
A host of programs are lined-up to mark the 55th anniversary of the
Sinhala Cultural Institute.
A multi- cultural show had been organized to take place at institute
premises, located in Bauddhaloka Mawatha, on August 9. The Sinhala
Cultural Institute will turn 55 on November 9.
Akasa Kusum makes it to Brisbane Festival
Prasanna Vithanage’s award winning movie Akasa Kusum (Flowers in the
Sky) will be screened at the Brisbane International Film Festival this
week.
The movie is scheduled to be screened at 6.40 p.m. today amidst 300
movies from all over the world.
The film is also likely to make an appearence in the upcoming
Montreal Film Festival in Canada.
La Sanda Kirana brings rays of talent

Sanduni Fonseka and Lahiru Hettiarachchi, two youngsters from the
Lanka Arts Foundation will display their creations at La Sanda Kirana,
an exhibition of paintings, at the National Art Gallery from August 7 to
9, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event is organized the Sulalitha Rekha Society
together with the Lanka Arts Foundation. Entrance free.
‘Cannery Row’ in Sinhala
Lokubanda
Tillekeratne’s latest Sinhala novel Montero Vitti was launched at
Dayawansa Jayakody Book Exhibition Hall, Colombo 10 on August 4. Montero
Vitti is the authentic Sinhala translation of John Steinbeck’s popular
novel ‘Cannery Row’.
Montero Vitti is a Dayawansa Jayakody publication.
NCC boosts local crafts

A traditional handicrafts fair organized by the National Crafts
Council (NCC) in collaboration with the Rural Industries and Self
Employment Promotion Ministry will be held at Janakala Kendra premises,
Battaramulla, on August 7 at 4 p.m. under the patronage of Minister of
Rural Industries and Self-Employment Promotion S. B. Navinna.
Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development and Chief
Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardana, Minister of Tourism Nandana
Gunatilleke and Minister of Rural Industries Premalal Jayasekara will
also grace the occasion.
All traditional handicrafts from the nine provinces will be exhibited
at the fair and available for sale.
An exhibition, demonstration and a workshop will be held under the
crafts exchange programme between Sri Lanka and India by the Sri Lankan
and Indian craftsmen on the same day at 4.30 p.m. The High Commissioner
of India in Sri Lanka Alok Prasad will declare open the workshop.
Chairman of NCC Buddhi Keerthisena invites all the craftsmen to take
part in these events.

Sulanga Mata Katha Karai blows to Elphinstone
For the first time in Sri Lankan history, the cinema and television
technology comes on to the local theatre. Sulanga Mata Katha Karai (Wind
Beckons To Me), a stage drama which was directed by Janaka Kumbukage and
Asoka Athavudahetti, will be staged at Elphinstone theatre on August 7
at 3.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m.
Chandani Seneviratna, Janaka Kumbukage, Wasantha Vittachchi and
‘Little Angel’ are the actors. The producer is Kumudumali Herath. Music
will be directed by Chandana Liyanage. The music composer is Navarathne
Gamage.
Make up will be handled by Wasantha Vittachchi. The event is
organised by Jude Srimal.
Kapuwa Kapothi makes an entrance

Kapuwa Kapothi is Dr. Ediriweera Sarachchandra and A. P. Gunarathna’s
translation of famous Russian author Nikolai Gogol’s comedy ‘Marriage’.
This comic play has been staged in the past and the new production is
scheduled to be staged for the first time at the Elphinstone Theatre,
Colombo 10, on August 15 at 3.30 and 6.45 p.m.
The stage decor of Kapuwa Kapothi is by Lionel Bentherage and the
cast comprises Nihal Fernando, Deepani Silva, Sarath Kulanga, Ariyaratne
Kaluarachchi, Wasantha Vittachchi, Lalith Rajapakse, Kumudu Prashanthi,
Kumari Manike Aththnayake, Anusha Dissanayake, Ravindra Ariyaratne and
Upamali Ranathunga.
Costumes are by Lalitha Sarachchandra while lighting is by Upali
Weerasinghe.
The stage management is by Dharmapala Bogoda and Ravindra Ariyaratne.
The new production and direction of the play is by Lalitha Sarachchandra.
