Rookantha Chandralekha Live at Stadium

Demi Hewamanna

It has been four years since they left the country, four years since the sounds of their voices have been heard and more than four years for them to have a live performance to show their fans how much they mean to the most unforgettable singing duo.

Rookantha and Chandralekha are names which are not strange to people’s ears. The duo is back from their four-year stay in the US to give their fans a one night’s special show ‘Rookantha Chandralekha Live @ Stadium’, on August 14 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from 7pm.

“It was four years ago that we left this island keeping in mind so many ideas, we didn’t know when we were going to come back as we just left and only a few people knew about it,” Rookantha said.

“I’m glad its not the country we left four years ago. There is hope for people and so many things have changed even the way of thinking. I’m grateful as a citizen and a lover of this country to the leadership of the country as well as all the sons and daughters who fought for peace and achieved it.”

There is lot of hope for music, artists, tourism and so many other aspects, Rookantha added.

The event will be organized by S3 Entertainment and Event Management Company, headed by Sangeetha Weeraratne, Sherine Kumaratunga and Sudharma Nethithikumara. The whole idea of holding a concert was because of Sherine, as they kept in constant touch with her. She had told them about the fact that they wanted to organize a show and that they would like them to perform and all.

“We wanted to do something with a change as we believe we can live peacefully with people”, Sangeetha Weerarathna said.

“We were wondering who we were going to do our first show with and then we thought about Rookantha, about his music, lyrics and everything else. We thought we should invite them back here after four years of no news from them in this country and they readily accepted it. There are lots of young musicians following Rookantha’s style of music and look up to his as their idol.”

The final concert in Sri Lanka the duo had was in 2005 and soon after that they left the country with their family. After four years they will perform 25 of their most famous songs with two new additions as well on the stage. These two additions are none other than their daughters, who both have an amazing voice (hear to believe it).

Raini Charuka, the eldest and Windy will perform for the first time onstage along with their mum and dad with the accompaniment of Channa Wijewardena and his crew. This will be the teams first ever live concert.

All proceeds of this concert will go to Jeevan Kumaratunga Fund, which will extend special financial assistance towards a housing project in the Dehiwela, Mount Lavinia and Moratuwa area in an effort to provide families of soldiers who laid down their lives during a three decade long ethnic war.
