New radio drama on YATV

Young Asia Television (YATV), dubbed the ‘eyes of Asia’ has decided to embark on a new adventure with the launch of a new radio drama series. Named Kannagipura/Kannagipuram, the innovative, entertaining and action oriented creation will go on air today (August 5).

An artiste’s vision of Kannagipura/Kannagipuram

It is made available to both the Sinhala and Tamil listeners on Wednesdays and Fridays on SLBC’s national, commercial and regional channels. A music CD with the bilingual theme song of the radio drama series has also been released to the local radio stations to mark its launch.

The tale of Kannagipura/Kannagipuram unfolds in a fictional Eastern village. Here youths take the prominence in matters and see that events run smoothly in life.

They bring waves of change along with romance, drama, action and conflict. It spotlights on the true situation of how youths of diverse personalities and backgrounds strive to live together and brings out many thought provoking themes to light. It also highlights the importance of tolerance, co-existence and respect among individuals in the community. Life is a challenge and it is up to each one and every person to make the wise decision to better his or her life.

The program is another part of YATV’s bid to give Asian youth a meaningful voice and highlight issues of vital importance to the region. The script of Kannagipura/Kannagipuram surfaced from the winners of a scriptwriting competition held in January.

They worked with the production team of YATV to develop the plot and divide the incidents into episodes. Together the team brought about new concepts and insights to the tale by picturing the events taking place in the local setup. In addition listener groups had been set up in nine districts of the country to provide feedback on events. Consultant of the project Francis Rolt worked with the group by providing technical support.

SLBC networks City FM, Rajarata FM, Kandurata FM, Wayamba Handa, Kothmale FM, Tendral FM, Perai FM and Jaffna Service will broadcast the program Wednesdays and Fridays from 6.45 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the exception of Tendral FM which will broadcast Kannagipura/Kannagipuram at 5.45 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The program is especially targeted at youths between 19 to 29 years. However listeners from all ages will find the radio drama series interesting, entertaining and a refreshing change from the day to day programs.
