India: Court orders arrest accused in Bhopal trial
India: Nearly 25 years after the Bhopal tragedy, a New Delhi court
instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to arrest ex
chairman of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson.
According to the ruling, which has been welcomed by survivors and
relatives of the victims, the CBI must bring Anderson to court
immediately, the newspaper Business Standard reported.
On the night of December 3, 1984, a leakage of 42 tons of toxic gas
(methyl isocyanine) poisoned 500,000 people. According to the first
report, 2,259 people died, although it was known later that nearly
10,000 people died during the first 72 hours after the leakage.
Anderson, the main defendant in the trial, has been on the run since
1992, when he refused to stand trial.
