CTB bags huge income

Regional Manager of the CTB Kandy Division Mahinda Basnayake said the income of the CTB exceeds, Rs. 100 lakhs a day, which is higher than that of the previous year. On the first day of the Randholi Perahera the income of the Depots of Kandy fetched Rs. 37 lakhs, he said. He has issued orders for bus crews to maintain strict discipline.


Bus topples, 30 injured

At least 30 passengers were injured and one in critical condition when a bus crashed on to a road side rock and toppled in Eheliyagoda yesterday morning. The private bus bearing number 29-5898 plying between Avissawella and Eheliyagoda road crashed on to a roadside rock and turned turtle, Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said.

The incident had occurred in Eheliyagoda around 11.30 a.m. yesterday.


Poya lecture

The Conference of Sri Lankan Malays (COSLAM) will conduct its monthly Islamic lecture series in the shade of the Holy Qur’ an’ at the YMMA Conference Main auditorium No. 63 Sri Vajiragnana Road, Dematagoda, Colombo 9 on Wednesday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys’ Association of St. Anthony’s College, Panadura will be held on August 9, Sunday at the school hall.


Public lecture

A public lecture on the ‘political and social changes sweeping Turkey and their impact in the Middle East and beyond’ will be held tomorrow at 9.30 a.m. at Ranmuthu Hotel, Colpetty.

Two senior Sri Lankan journalists, Latheef Farook and Ameen Izzadeen will address the meeting organised by the recently launched website SeylanMuslims.com.

The meeting also includes a question and answer session.


Steps to import Pedigreed dogs

Steps have been taken to import 25 pedigreed dogs from England and Sweden to be trained in the detection of explosives and mine clearing in the North and East, said Deputy Director of Police Kennels ASP Lal Seneviratne.

He said preference would be given to German shepherd, Labrador and Belgian Malanoy breeds who are one year old. They have picked a special team of officers to train the new dogs.


Vocational training for displaced youth

The National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority in association with Holcim Lanka (Pvt) Ltd has initiated a program to train the displaced youth in welfare centres in Vavuniya on carpentry, states National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority press release.

Holcim Lanka has set apart Rs. 4.4 million while NAITA will provide all the training, supervision and assessment facilities.

The Authority will also provide Rs. 2 million for payment of allowances to trainees and as lecture fees.


Buddhist talk in English

Prof. Sumanapala Galmangoda will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in English on “Anaththa and liberation” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on August 8 at 4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

Condolence book at Embassy

A Book of Condolence will be kept open for the public at the Consulate General of the Philippines at No. 41, Sir Ernest De Silva Mawatha, Colombo 07 from August 3 to 7 from 1.30 to 7.30 pm for the late Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino, who died on August 1.


PB case put off for August 24

The Supreme Court yesterday put off for August 24, the supporting of the application by former Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundara to relieve him from an affidavit tendered to the Supreme Court in the fundamental rights Application against the privatization of the Lanka Marine Service Ltd.(LMSL).

The counsel for the petitioners and several respondents in the case informed court that they have not received the documents filed by Dr. P.B.Jayasundara.

They also raised objections to certain documents that had been already filed.

Accordingly, the court directed President's Counsel Faiz Musthapha counsel for Dr. Jayasundara to tender the documents to the petitioner and respondents.


Madhu forms at churches, Police stations

A special application form for devotees attending the Madhu festival can be obtained from any Police station and Catholic churches.Military Spokesman Brigadier Nanayakkara said devotees attending the annual Madhu festival are requested to fill an application form containing their personal information.

"This application form can be obtained from any police station or any Catholic church and hand over to the Security Forces at the entrance of Madhu", he added.
