UN envoy for Somali green zone
US: UN special envoy for Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah proposed the
Security Council create a security area (Green Zone) in the African
country, where armed clashes continue.
In a report, the veteran Mauritanian diplomat said this security area
in Mogadishu, the capital, would serve as home for government
headquarters and international bodies.
Ould-Abdallah said international support to Somalia is now more
crucial, as the Transitional Federal Government has been able to resist
attacks by hostile groups, all of which shows advances in training,
equipment and remuneration of security forces, but it requires world
backing.
He recommended the return to Mogadishu of UN bodies, mainly its
offices, which were moved to Nairobi, Kenya, when violence erupted in
the Somali capital, so as to work more efficiently for peace and assist
the needy in Somalia. United Nations, Prensa Latina |
